A Data Model for Audio-Video Data

Audio and video data have become critical components of information systems and these systems need to e ciently manage the large storage requirements of this type of data. However, there are no formal data models for audio video data. In this paper, we present an algebraic formalism which attempts to provide the underpinnings for the design and implementation of systems which organize and query such data. The central class of interest in the formalism is the track, which is both the major repository of structure and the unit of physical storage. Primitive track operations involve moving information of a single track, pointwise combination of two tracks, or manipulation of one track based on the structure of the another. Interrelations between primitives are explored and common user-level operations, such as splicing and overlaying, are de ned in terms of the primitives. 3
